These are from a huge oxbow lake called Grant’s Canal in Louisiana. During the Civil War he dug a canal from the lake to the Mississippi to use as a safe harbor and a launching platform for attacks in Confederate territory. Eventually the river moved and it silted up again isolating the lake once more.
