Day 11 – Oklahoma to Kansas

Tulsa 5 and Diner

It had been nice taking a break from the road to see the Zoo and hang out with my sister for a few days but we had to keep on going. We had wanted to see the Aquarium too but there just wasn’t enough time and tickets there were more expensive and they weren’t open as long, whats up with that?

The previous day we had taken my sister out to eat and on the way home passed by a old timey diner, conveniently located right next to the Harley dealership. You can guess where we ended up for breakfast the next morning. The Tulsa 5 & Diner was fabulous. The food was good but decor and ambiance just puts it at a new level. The diner had plenty of old motorcycle memorabilia on the walls and was complete with soda shop inside. Did I mention all the employees wore vintage uniforms as well, cool!

Check out this fan. Flames, chrome eagles and tips and motorcycle headlights. When I get a pool room I want one of these!

I wish they had signs like this back home, I do not like booze in my gas. Ethanol kills my mileage and with the dual smaller carburetters on the V Star 650 the idle jets are prone to getting gummed up and clogged in just a couple weeks time of sitting with ethanol in them.

No Ethanol!

What the hell? I guess I just do not understand Kansasan humor. Some of these are obviously political but I dont get it. These things just go on forever, it had to have taken years worth of work to do. I can only ask Why? …

They must have a wierd sense of humor out here, or just bored.

Its not a BMW outfitted for a trip across Africa thats never been off the pavement but with the ADV sticker from ADVrider.com on the front I had to get a shot of us when we stopped at Starbucks. Inside joke.

We made it to Dodge City with time to spare. Its a cool historic town that seems like most of the local economy is driven by tourism. Several places throughout town had maps and fliers listing all the historic buildings museums and things to see and do, all the restaurants by category and price as well as all of the hotels by price with a little bit about each place listed.

Very nicely done, more tourist towns need to take a lesson from this. With just a couple sheets of paper we had all the information we needed to find a good locally owned non-chain restaurant off of main street and sorta hidden behind a motel and another local place for breakfast that we wouldn’t have otherwise. We also had enough information for some self guided tours through town to check out things and to find a cheaper motel. Instead of roaming aimlessly through town we were armed with information to make better choices and have a better overall experience. Are you listening New Mexico tourist traps?

We had just enough time to go through Boot Hill Museum before closing time. They set up tables under the tent in the background and had one of those mock Old West gunfights along their town street followed by some chuck wagon cooking. Tickets for the meal and show were fairly expensive, way over our budget. We keep wanting to go to Flying J Ranch back in Ruidoso for their similar old west show and meal.
