After our little adventure in the bog we desperately needed a drink. The big box of Emergen-C
packets we bought has turned out to be a wise investment, all you need is some cold water and instant tangerine fizzy drink. Its easy to find a water fountain somewhere or just run the faucet in the bathroom a while for some cold water, the packets are small enough to easily stash nearly anywhere without taking up valuable storage space and they just plain taste good. I used to use this stuff quite a bit when I was cycling and doing track and cross country in high school, when you’re exhausted from a workout it really works to help you recover and rehydrate. This one box we bought will probably last the whole trip and only cost $10, way cheaper than 2-4 gatoraids a day X 14 days. I love that they have many flavors available now and not just the generic lemony citrus kind they used to.
At the suggestion of one of the Florida riders on one of my forums I found if you fill your helmet up with water to get the liner good and wet it does help keep you cool for a good 30 minutes in this horrendous heat. Despite what I said Cece didn’t want to try it and just opted for the cold water down the back under her jacket method, some people are no fun 😉
The V Star was running great but this wooshy noise that Patrick had commented on this morning was starting to get worse and I was noticing the shifting was starting to get a bit chunkier than usual, all symptoms that I was starting to get a little low on oil. I pulled over to take a better listen and see how the oil was doing when she started hacking and coughing and backfiring through the carbs if I sat still at idle. Great … Now I guess I’m going to need to throw in those richer jets I brought along when I get a chance.
While we were stopped, I took the opportunity to check the map to figure out which road to take and a nice couple told us to turn at the Dollar store for Flint. This turned out to be some invaluable directions as the sign was tiny and many people miss the turn we found out later.
Flint is, lets just say tiny. I don’t know what the population is but the business district is about as big as the office building I work in. The whole town pretty much consists of a intersection and a gas station. It was very pretty and green with lots of huge houses with lots of ranch land around them, however.
Terry and Wanda’s new house was nice, an amazing yard and great library. This is their twenty-somethingth house since they’ve been married, crazy. Terry like this one because the yard is a manageable size.
During all of the visiting it came out that we had not eaten since yesterday. Woops! Sorry! With the 2 gatoraids and all the Emergen-C we’d been drinking all day to stay hydrated I guess I didn’t notice. So we took a quick shower and all went out to the Purple Pig Cafe.
They had some amazing food here and inside was all decorated with Native American stuff. Rifles, weapons, pictures of many chiefs, pretty cool decor. Several of our meals came with these sliced potatoes cooked with cornmeal dusted over them. Wow, I need to learn how to make those! Those are awesome, almost as good as the sweet potato fries at the Zia Diner in Santa Fe.
After dinner we got the grand tour of the area on our way to feed Lil Bit their barrel racing horse that their grand daughter rides. They kept her at a boarding ranch with many other horses. Seems like a pretty good deal, just pay someone else to feed and take care of them for you and do all the hard work while you just show up to ride when you feel like it. I remember how much work they were doing everything yourself, when I’d go visit friends and help out with the animals growing up. I think they get fed and there’s plenty to graze on but as a competition horse she needs some extra high protein food.
We just drove out there calling for her and she came running for her food. Cece thought this was the best thing ever. Now she reeaally wants a horse.
All in all a pretty nice day, can’t wait till tomorrow when we get to the lake.
Lit bit the horse was very special and sweet, I really enjoyed being around the horses. That was FUN!
